There’s little else to say, other than to briefly outline the slow collapse of Nayan’s marriage. Slow, because there was no great, long-forestalled confrontation when they parted. There was no conversation at all, in fact, dramatic or otherwise. Guilt did them both in over time, a gradual, piecemeal fraying. Nayan started attending more out-of-town union conferences, paying to stay at the hotel a day or two longer than was required. When he came home, he’d find a note on the fridge explaining that she’d be at her mother’s for a few days, maybe a week, and that there were meals in the freezer for him and Dad, who was now living with them. Month on month, the hotel stays increased, the maternal visits lengthened, until neither expected the other to be at home, and if they were, they ate separately, in different rooms, with Nayan listening out for Deepti, to hear their bedroom door shut before he fell asleep in front of the television. It all felt inexorable. More so, because they couldn’t look at one another any more, as though in the other’s face resided their own culpability. Her wardrobe began to empty, and then one morning she mentioned applying for a teaching role in Birmingham, where her massi lived. When he talks about it now, when he talked about it with me, Nayan chokes on the sadness of it all, but back then he felt relief, as he’s sure Deepti did, too. By the time she left, it had been eighteen months without Veer, and they didn’t see each other again until the following winter, when she suggested they meet up on Veer’s birthday. In the same message, she proposed the park. He didn’t reply for days.
